2. Turn pages and watch the thumbnails turn: use the arrows under a page, or Left, Right and 180° for every page. Tick pages first, or pick Odd, Even or Landscape, to turn only those.
3. Click Apply & Download PDF, then Download File to save rotated_yourfile.pdf, or Preview Document to check it.

Key features of Rotate PDF

👀 Live preview

Each page is drawn as a thumbnail with pdf.js, and it turns on screen the moment you click. Nothing is saved until you apply, so you can try a direction, undo it with the other arrow or Reset, and try again.

🎯 All pages or just some

Turn one page with its own arrows, tick several and turn them together, or select all, odd, even or landscape pages in one click. Pages you do not touch are left exactly as they were.

📄 Pages are not redrawn

The tool changes each page's rotation setting with pdf-lib instead of re-rendering it, so text and images are untouched and the file stays about the same size.

🔒 Rotated in your browser

The file is read, previewed and rotated by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.

About Rotate PDF

Rotate PDF shows every page of your file as a thumbnail and lets you turn pages a quarter or half turn, one at a time or in groups, with the thumbnails turning as you go. When you apply, pdf-lib updates the rotation attribute of each page you turned. Nothing is rasterised or re-encoded: the page content stays exactly as it was, and viewers display it turned.

It fixes a scan that came out sideways, turns a landscape chart the right way up in the middle of a portrait report, or flips a document that was fed into the scanner upside down. Pages that already carry a rotation keep it, and your turn is added on top; the thumbnails show the result either way.

When to use Rotate PDF

A batch of receipts photographed with a phone and saved as a PDF comes out with every page on its side. Click Right or Left once, check that the thumbnails read upright, and apply.

A report has a few landscape charts that were scanned sideways among portrait pages. Tick just those pages, or click Landscape to select every wide page, turn them, and the rest of the report is left alone.

A double-sided scan has every back page upside down. Click Even and then 180°, and only the back pages are turned.

If the pages are upright but in the wrong order, or a page has to go, rotation is not involved: use Reorder Pages or Delete Pages. To trim the edges as well, run Crop PDF on the rotated file; its preview shows the pages the way they now appear.

Tips and troubleshooting

  • Left, Right, 180° and Reset act on the ticked pages when any are ticked, and on every page when none are. The line under the file name says which.
  • Landscape selects the pages that display wider than tall, which includes portrait pages already stored with a quarter turn. On a long file it stays greyed out for a moment while the page sizes are read.
  • Turns add up: two clicks on Right are a half turn, and four bring the page back to where it started. The angle under each thumbnail is the turn you have added, not the page's stored rotation.
  • Apply & Download PDF stays greyed out until at least one page is turned. After a result, the thumbnails stay on screen, so you can change a page and apply again.
  • The output is named rotated_ followed by the original filename, and the result line says how many pages were turned.
  • A password-protected file stops with "Could not open this PDF", and so does an encrypted file that opens without a password but restricts changes; remove the protection with Unlock PDF first. A long file takes a moment to draw all its thumbnails, but you can start turning pages straight away.

How Rotate PDF works in your browser

The file is read into memory once and opened by pdf-lib as well as pdf.js, so an encrypted file is refused before you start. pdf.js draws each page as a small thumbnail, one after another, and each page's turn is kept as a number while you work; clicking only changes that number and a CSS rotation on the thumbnail, which is why the preview turns as soon as you click.

When you click Apply & Download PDF, pdf-lib takes each turned page's rotation attribute as the file stored it (0 when there is none), adds your turn and writes back the result as 0, 90, 180 or 270. The page's content stream, fonts and images are not opened or altered. pdf-lib then saves the document to a Blob for the Download File button; nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rotate just one page?

Yes. Every page has its own arrows under its thumbnail, and you can tick several pages to turn them together. Pages you do not turn are saved unchanged.

Will rotating reduce the quality of my PDF?

No. Only the page rotation setting is changed, so text stays selectable and images are not recompressed.

Which way do the buttons turn the pages?

Right turns a page a quarter turn clockwise, Left a quarter turn counter-clockwise, and 180° turns it upside down. The thumbnails show the result before anything is saved.

Can I rotate by a custom angle such as 45 degrees?

No. PDF page rotation only allows quarter turns, so the tool offers left, right and half turns. Any other angle would need the content redrawn, which this tool does not do.

How do I undo a turn before saving?

Click the opposite arrow, or Reset to clear the turn from the selected pages, or from every page when none are selected. Nothing is written until you apply.

Will the rotated file open the right way up on a phone?

Yes. The rotation is stored as a standard page attribute that viewers apply when they draw the page, so the file displays turned wherever it is opened. The tool itself also runs in a mobile browser.
