Why these PDF tools run in your browser

Most online PDF converters upload your file to a server, process it there, and send the result back. Every tool on PDFTools.studio does the work on your own computer instead. The page loads an open-source PDF library (pdf-lib for writing, pdf.js for reading and rendering), and your file is read, changed and saved in the browser's memory. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and the download is built on your device. The guide are online PDF tools safe? explains the difference in full, and how to check any site yourself.

That has two practical consequences. Speed depends on your computer rather than on a queue on someone else's server, and a contract, a medical record or a tax return can be edited without handing a copy to a stranger. The trade-off is that a browser can do less than a desktop application: the Office converters are text-only, OCR downloads its language data once before it can run, and large files depend on your device's memory. Each tool page says what it does and does not handle. If you are coming from a server-based service, see how this site compares with iLovePDF, Smallpdf, PDF24, Sejda and Adobe Acrobat, or read all comparisons.

What you can do here

Convert. Turn JPG and PNG images, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML and plain text into PDF, or go the other way with PDF to JPG, PDF to PNG, PDF to Word, PDF to Excel, PDF to PPT, PDF to Text, PDF to HTML and PDF to Markdown. The Office converters carry text, not layout.

Edit and mark up. The PDF Editor adds text, images, highlights, whiteout, drawings and shapes, and can retype words already on the page. Smaller single-job tools add text, place an image, highlight search terms, draw with a pen, stamp a watermark, remove a text watermark, place a drawn signature, fill form fields and number pages.

Organize pages. Merge whole files, combine chosen page ranges from several files, split into one file per page, delete, extract, rotate, reorder or crop pages. Pages are copied as they are, so nothing is re-rendered.

Protect and check. Encrypt with AES-256, remove a password you know, redact words from the text layer, compare the text of two files and edit the title, author and keywords.

Shrink, scan and read. Compress a PDF by re-encoding its images, compress images, make a scan searchable with OCR, photograph pages with your camera, read a PDF in a viewer, or make a QR code.

Common questions

Are the tools really free?

Yes. There is no account, no subscription, no limit on how many files you process, and no watermark on the output. The site may show advertisements, and only after you accept them.

Is it safe to use with confidential documents?

The file is opened by JavaScript in your browser and never leaves your computer. You can check this yourself: open the browser's network panel while a tool runs and you will see no upload. Two exceptions are stated on their pages: OCR downloads its language data once, and the HTML to PDF tool's URL mode sends the address you type to a proxy.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in a current mobile browser. Tools that open large files depend on the phone's memory, and the drawing and signature tools are easier with a stylus or a mouse.

Why does a converted Word or Excel file look different from the original?

The Office converters read the text of the file and typeset it with a standard font. Images, tables, fonts and page layout are not carried across. That is a limit of converting in a browser without Word installed, and each converter's page says so.
