Key features of WEBP to PDF
Each picture gets its own page, at its pixel size in points (up to 14,400 a side) or fitted on an A4 or Letter page turned to match its shape, inside an 18-point margin.
A picture with transparent pixels is stored as PNG, so its alpha channel survives; an opaque one as JPEG at quality 92, which keeps the file smaller.
The pictures are decoded and placed by JavaScript in your browser with pdf-lib. Nothing is sent to a server, and there is no account or watermark.
About WEBP to PDF
WEBP is an image format made by Google, common on websites and in pictures saved from a browser. A PDF cannot hold WEBP data: the image formats PDF supports are JPEG, JPEG 2000 and a few lossless kinds. So the tool lets your browser decode each WEBP, re-encodes the pixels in a form a PDF can hold, and places them with pdf-lib, one picture per page.
A picture with any transparent pixel becomes a lossless image with a soft mask, so the see-through parts stay see-through; every other picture becomes a JPEG at quality 92. Because WEBP usually compresses better than JPEG, the PDF is often larger than the WEBP files together. An animated WEBP gives only its first frame. The picker lists .webp files, but a JPG or PNG dragged onto the zone is converted the same way if your browser can open it.
When to use WEBP to PDF
You saved product photos or screenshots from a website and they arrived as .webp files, which some upload forms and older programs refuse. Put them in one PDF and send that instead.
An expense report asks for receipts as a single PDF, and your browser saved the pictures as WEBP. Choose A4 so every receipt lands on a page that prints at a normal size.
A diagram or a logo has a transparent background. It keeps its transparency in the PDF, which matters when the file is printed on coloured paper or placed over other artwork in a layout program.
For JPG and PNG files, JPG to PDF and PNG to PDF embed the files without a lossy re-encode. To go the other way, PDF to JPG turns pages into pictures.
Tips and troubleshooting
- The picker lists only .webp files, but drag and drop accepts any file. A file your browser cannot open as an image stops the conversion with "Could not read photo.webp: this browser cannot open it as an image." A WEBP that was cut short, by an interrupted download for example, is reported as incomplete. Either way no PDF is made. With other pictures in the list, the file is removed and you return to the list, where Convert to PDF converts the rest.
- Same as the image makes each page as many points as the picture has pixels, so a 4000-pixel photo becomes a page about 141 cm wide; viewers fit it to the window. A side over 14,400 pixels is scaled down to 14,400 points, the largest page the PDF standard recommends; the pixels are kept. Choose A4 or US Letter for pages that print at a normal size.
- With A4 or US Letter each page is turned to match its picture: a wide photo gets a landscape page and a tall one a portrait page, with the picture centred inside an 18-point margin.
- A picture with even one transparent pixel is stored as PNG, which is larger than JPEG. If the PDF is bigger than you want, Compress PDF re-encodes large images.
- An animated WEBP gives only its first frame, because a PDF page is a still picture.
- Pages cannot be reordered by dragging. Add the files in the order you want, or move pages afterwards with Reorder Pages.
- Every picture is decoded in the tab's memory, so a very large batch can exhaust a phone. Convert it in smaller groups and join the parts with Merge PDF.
How WEBP to PDF works in your browser
The files you add stay as File objects and are shown through local object URLs. When you click Convert to PDF, each one is decoded by the browser with createImageBitmap, drawn onto a canvas and checked pixel by pixel for transparency. A WEBP shorter than the length in its own header, or a file createImageBitmap rejects, is reported and taken off the list instead of becoming a blank page. The canvas is then saved as a JPEG at quality 92, or as a PNG when a transparent pixel was found, and pdf-lib embeds that image: the JPEG as it is, the PNG with its alpha channel as a soft mask.
Each image gets a page of its own size (kept between 3 and 14,400 points a side), or an A4 or Letter page turned to match it, and is drawn to fill the page or to fit inside the margin. The document is saved to bytes and offered on the result card. The page loads pdf-lib from cdnjs.cloudflare.com when it opens, and, apart from Google Analytics while it is switched on, that is the only network request involved; your pictures and the PDF stay in the tab's memory and are gone when you close it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I combine several WEBP files into one PDF?
Yes. Select several at once, or click + Add More Images after the first batch. Each picture becomes one page, in the order shown.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. A picture with transparent pixels is stored as a lossless image with a soft mask, so transparent areas stay transparent. Viewers show them over a white page.
Why is the PDF larger than my WEBP files?
A PDF cannot store WEBP, so each picture is re-encoded as JPEG or PNG, and WEBP usually compresses better than both. Compress PDF can make the result smaller.
Does it work with animated WEBP?
Only the first frame is used. A PDF page is a still picture, so the animation is not kept.
Can I put the pictures on A4 pages?
Yes. Choose A4 or US Letter under Page size. Each picture is fitted inside an 18-point margin on a page turned to match its shape.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The pictures are decoded and placed by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and the PDF is created on your device.
