An iLovePDF alternative that never uploads your files
Comparison checked on September 30, 2026
iLovePDF is a large, well-run PDF service that processes your files on its own platform. PDFTools.studio does the same everyday jobs (merge, split, compress, rotate, protect, OCR and more) inside your browser, so the file never leaves your device. It is free, has no account and no daily task limit. It is also more limited in places, and this page says where.
Why people look for an alternative to iLovePDF
Three reasons come up most. The first is privacy: some documents, such as a contract, a payslip or a medical letter, should not be sent to a third party at all, however carefully that party handles them. The second is limits: iLovePDF's free Basic plan offers limited document processing and a smaller set of tools, with file size and batch caps that differ from tool to tool. The third is features held back for paying customers, such as OCR inside conversions.
If none of those affect you, iLovePDF may already be the right tool. If one does, the comparison below shows where the two differ.
Side by side
| PDFTools.studio | iLovePDF | |
|---|---|---|
| Where your file is processed | In your browser, on your own device. Nothing is uploaded. | On iLovePDF's platform. Its security page says files are encrypted in transit and at rest and deleted within two hours of processing. |
| Price | Free. No paid plan exists. | A free plan, plus paid Premium and Business plans. |
| Limits on free use | Up to 150 MB per file on most tools and no daily or hourly task limit. Large files depend on your device's memory. | Limited document processing and a smaller set of tools. File size and batch caps vary by tool. |
| Advertisements | Only after you accept them. | Shown on the free plan. |
| OCR | Free. Adds a searchable text layer in seven languages. Non-Latin scripts are skipped. | OCR inside PDF to Word and PDF to Excel is a Premium feature. |
| PDF to Word, Excel, PowerPoint | Text only. Paragraphs or columns are rebuilt from the text; images, fonts and layout are not carried across. PDF to PPT places each page as an image. | Server-side conversion. Its PDF to Word page promises "incredible accuracy" and names Solid Documents as the engine. |
| Signatures | Places a signature you draw, as an image. It is not a cryptographic or certified signature. | Electronic signatures that integrate qualified trust service providers under eIDAS. |
| Apps and offline use | Website only. Works in a current browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, Android and iOS. | Desktop apps for Windows and Mac and mobile apps for iOS and Android. Its pricing page lists desktop and mobile access with the paid plans. |
| Certifications | None. The site never receives your files, so there is no stored data to certify. | States ISO/IEC 27001 certification and GDPR compliance. |

What the difference means in practice
Privacy. Both services take security seriously, in different ways. iLovePDF protects files it receives: encryption, a two-hour deletion window and an audited security standard. PDFTools.studio avoids receiving them. The page loads an open-source PDF library into your browser, and your file is read, changed and saved in your device's memory. You can confirm this yourself by opening the browser's network panel while a tool runs. Two tools need something from the internet and say so on their pages: OCR downloads its language data once, and the URL mode of HTML to PDF sends the address you type to a proxy.
Limits. With no server doing the work, there is no queue and no reason to ration tasks. The practical limit is your own device: a long scanned document on an older phone can be slow or run out of memory, where a server would cope.
Conversion quality. This is where iLovePDF is stronger. A faithful conversion between PDF and Office formats needs software that a browser does not have. If the document must look the same in Word as it does in the PDF, use iLovePDF or a desktop application. If you need the words out of a PDF so you can edit or quote them, the text-only converters here do that.
Who should switch, and who should not
PDFTools.studio fits if you merge, split, reorder, rotate, compress, watermark, protect or unlock PDFs; if you hit a free-plan limit; if the document is confidential; or if you want OCR without paying.
Stay with iLovePDF if you need Office conversions that keep the layout, a signature with legal standing, desktop or mobile apps, team features, or a vendor with a security certification your organisation requires.
The two work well together: a browser tool for private documents and quick page work, and a server-based service for the occasional full conversion.
For the general question, the guide are online PDF tools safe? explains what a server-based service does with a file and when one is the better choice.

Frequently asked questions
Is iLovePDF safe to use?
It depends on what the file contains. iLovePDF's security page says files are encrypted in transit and at rest and deleted within two hours of processing, so the file does reach its platform and you rely on that promise. PDFTools.studio avoids the question by never receiving the file: each tool runs in your browser.
Is PDFTools.studio a free alternative to iLovePDF?
Yes. All 48 tools are free, with no account, no daily task limit and no watermark. The site may show advertisements, and only after you accept them.
Does PDFTools.studio upload my files?
No. Every tool opens and processes your file with JavaScript in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. iLovePDF's security page says files processed on its platform are encrypted in transit and at rest and deleted within two hours, so they are stored on its platform until then.
What can iLovePDF do that PDFTools.studio cannot?
Conversions between PDF and Word, Excel or PowerPoint that aim to keep the layout, OCR inside those conversions, desktop and mobile apps, and electronic signatures through qualified trust service providers. PDFTools.studio's Office converters carry text only, and its signature tool places a drawn image.
Do I need to move anything over from iLovePDF?
No. There is no account and nothing is stored, so there is nothing to migrate. Open the tool you need and drop your file on it.
